Introducing Toddlers to Numbers

It is essential that we understand numbers, since it is crucial in our day to day lives. This makes it an essential life skill; making it vital that kids are able to identify and understand numbers from an early age. Having an understanding of numbers from an early age lets your child be better equipped later on when dealing with more complex mathematical tasks and concepts they will learn later on in their academic and school career. Below are a few strategies and approaches you can take as parents when introducing the concept of numbers to your child:

  1. Make Numbers a Fun and Creative Activity
One way that parents often use to get their child into numbers is to make it a fun and creative activity. While this may not get them to comprehend and understand numbers in order, but that is okay! As long as the child is interacting with numbers in an interesting and fun manner, they will learn and develop an interest in numbers. Make time and engage in fun math activities for kids. Innovate and create fun math games. Make these sessions fun, and times the child looks forward to.
  2. Use Numbers in Day-to-Day Chores
Here is a great way to teach your child numbers. Use them in your day-to-day chores. By incorporating numbers into their day-to-day activities, it will normalize math and numbers to them; getting them adjusted to the concept.
  3. Sing Songs with Numbers
Singing songs with numbers and sitting with your children as they sing songs with numbers is a fun way to learn the concept of numbers. It serves as a good gateway to numbers; it is easy and fun.
  4. Use Numbers when you’re Out
You need not only sit inside your house with number games, but instead have the option to take them outside, mix the games up. This makes the learning experience more fun and interesting for both you and your toddler. Make numbers an adventure for your child and they will enjoy the learning process and this will be more effective. The more they are exposed to numbers; inside and outside of home, the further it will become integrated into their day-to-day lives.
  5. Use Numbers in Art and Drawing
Using numbers in art and drawings will help your toddler visualize numbers, thus helping them gain a better understanding of numbers. It is a creative, enjoyable and exciting activity.

Math is essential and vital in your child’s pre-school and early years of their academic career. Many parents know math is important, but not why. Math and numbers play a crucial role in not just academics but in one’s day-to-day life.

Math is not solely about numbers, it also comprises of shapes, comparing sizes, patterns, grouping and sorting. It involves and develops your child’s problem-solving skills, understanding of the world and their surroundings. Children are constantly learning from their environment, absorbing every little detail – major and minute alike; and processing it. Numbers help us process and understand the world around us and give context to it. Researchers have also suggested that a child’s understanding of numbers play a substantial role in the future of their academic career and its success.

The Time for Math program from Learning Time is all of these, and more! There’s dollops of fun, songs, puzzles, activities to get children started comprehending and understanding the concepts of numbers, counting, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, measurement; everything toddlers need.

But when is it the right time to teach your toddler numbers? Now that is a question that seems to have no one universal answer. But you can start around your child’s first birthday. Do remember that this activity should be fun, so your toddler does not lose interest quickly. You can even start teaching your kids about numbers after the age of 2 or 3. Remember, there is no one right answer and age to start learning numbers, the key is to not rush your child.
